My Students
Learning numbers is one of the most basic foundational math skills, and you can help my students master it faster than ever! Many of my students don't have experience or practice counting and recognizing numbers at home, and we need extra materials to push more math practice in the classroom.
My students are four-year-old girls living in the most under-served area of Washington, D.C.
Our all-girls school is 98% African-American and over 90% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. My girls are bright, curious, sweet and full of excitement for learning.
At home, they may not have access to fun manipulatives, or they may not have enough time to practice matching and recognizing numbers. Because they're preparing for kindergarten next year, they need daily practice counting, sorting, measuring and grouping.
My Project
These math materials are not only fun and engaging, but they're very enriching and standards-driven. Having such fun manipulatives such as "bugs" and "cars" will help my students love counting. Additionally, the fun number stamps will encourage my students to want to write, write, write their numbers as much as possible.
The idea behind these materials is that they would be used during whole-group instruction but also provided for my students in an independent environment so they'll be able to independently practice all these essential math skills.
My four-year-old students are starting strong to become the star scholars they're meant to be, but to get there they need to start with engaging and strong materials in their classroom.
Because girls tend to score lower in math and science nationwide, it's so important for them to have fun with math as soon as possible. All of these rich math materials will emphasize that math is fun, engaging and entertaining!
