Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school, located in Chicago's north side, has a 92% Hispanic population. Nearly all of our students come from low-income households. Despite this, they come to school with smiles on their faces, eager to learn something new.

My kindergarten students deserve the opportunity to receive the best education they can get in order to thrive throughout their lives.

While our school provides as much as it possibly can in order to ensure that students are successful, our district budget often limits what schools can provide.

My Project

My students love math and working with numbers, but I don't have many materials or games in our classroom that correlate to what we are learning. My students have been using the same few addition, subtraction, and counting games all year, but they also need games and manipulatives that will help them learn about number decomposition, measurement, and number sense.

Learning becomes more meaningful for kindergarten students when they are being engaged through hands-on experiences.

The measurement and weight centers, number bond game, Pop & Add game, magnetic pattern builders, magnetic counters and numbers, and build-a-number houses would allow them to use a kinesthetic approach when learning about concepts that can be quite difficult to understand on paper.

The count and link game, ten-frames, printing numbers practice books, numbers to 100 match-ups and number talk activity center will help them with counting and number sense, which are skills we work on all year. With these materials, my students will be more engaged in their learning, which I hope will result in higher retention of concepts learned.
