My Students

Our third grade students are excited for school. They love to learn, create, and grow! We want to find activities that continue to enhance their creativity and light their love for learning. Each year we try to do this project because it is definitely a highlight.

We have 95 third grade students currently.

We have received funding for 50 shirts and we are now working to fund the other 50. Our number of students rise and falls each week. School is a common ground for them with over 65 percent of students receiving free and reduced-priced lunch. Every year we try to create t-shirts as a team building activity, and also to provide an opportunity that our students might not otherwise get. Students get to wear their shirts on rally days and field trips. For each student, buying a t-shirt has proven to be incredibly challenging for their families.

My Project

This year we would again like to provide each student with a t-shirt with our school logo printed on it to tie dye. We'd like to tie dye these t-shirts different colors, one per classroom, and finish them so that our students can wear them on fun days for the rest of the spring. During this activity, students learn about inferences by thinking about how their design is going to turn out. They also use a lot of fine motor skills, along with hand-eye coordination as they plan out their rubber bands and twists. They get to be creative and incorporate different designs too. Science is also incorporated by learning how the colors are soaked up into the t-shirt. They also feel a part of a community, a community of third grade students. Lastly, these t-shirts show a sense of pride in our school and this, in turn, motivates our students to come to school each day and give it their best.

The smiles these t-shirts will put on our students' faces will be amazing.

These are t-shirts our students have been known to wear for many years to come. Watching our students walk down our halls with the same t-shirt, in multiple colors, will again put me in awe. This project is so much more than a t-shirt and dye - it is motivating learning, motivating creativity, and motivating joy.
