My Students

My students are economically disadvantaged. All of them are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. They are wonderful kids. My school has a tradition of being a neighborhood school, but it is now a school in transition. Nearly 1/4 of the families now receive Supplemental Social Security Income or Public Assistance. Our student population is racially and ethnically diverse. Over 20% are in ELL and/or Indian Education or SPED programs. We have students from Somalia, China, the Philippines, Vietnam, as well as Natives from rural Alaska. My students can't afford field trips so we take field trips on the playground.

I have the pleasure of teaching library skills to third graders who are trying very hard to learn everything they can under less than ideal circumstances.

My students want to expand their horizons, but they struggle with special needs and the English language. Many of my kids are the children of deployed military personnel. School is everything for them.

My Project

My students have limited access to enrichment activities or technology at home. Third grade is an important year for learning basic science concepts, scientific method and research. My students need materials that they can read about science, the world around them and the scientific method. Our science curriculum recently changed and we do not have any science books.

My students are starving for science but they need accessible, interesting science materials that will feed their natural curiosity.

They need seven different trade book, text sets including six copies of Arctic Lights, Arctic Nights and six copies of Weather Words and What They Mean. I am also asking for three different, intriguing titles about scientists and science topics including You Are Stardust and Wangari's Trees of Peace: A True Story from Africa.

I plan to teach my students about close reading using short passages in the nonfiction science books. I also plan to create a library science center where students can explore and read. My students will work in teams to read the book sets, explore the science trade books, and take notes in their science notebooks. Then they will create posters to share their information with parents and other students.

Please help bring science into the lives of my students. They will be developing their reading skills, as well as a knowledge of basic science concepts and the impact of weather on the environment.
