My Students

Welcome to Chicago. We are the city of neighborhoods. My school is nestled on a tree lined street. You may see a group of students with strong character words on their backs, Compassion, Critical thinker, Integrity, Explorer, and Active Citizen. These traits are at the root of everything we do at Polaris Charter Academy.

My students may be wondering where their next meal will come from, but for the next 8 hours, they will be passionately learning all that they can so that they have their pick of the best middle and high schools the city has to offer.

As the bell rings, students walk with younger siblings, with grandparents and moms.

I am a teacher in one of the toughest neighborhoods in the city of Chicago. My students are neighborhood kids. My students are passionate, Sox and Cubbie fans. My boys are passionate about basketball and my girls love all things dancing and video gaming. I have a pretty typical 3rd-grade class, amidst the violence and poverty they see outside their windows, our classroom is a safe haven.

My Project

As third graders, we are looking to earn 8 Chromebooks so we can research everything about Urban Farming. We are learning about taking care of living things and our teachers think Chickens and Urban farms is the way to change the way our community eats.

So far this year we have learned that food and food deserts are a social justice issue.

We know that one way we can become global citizens is to become active citizens within our school. We are learning about compassion, integrity and exploration through this project. But we are missing one important part. We do not have access to technology to learn more about our chickens. We need each child in our class to have access to the internet and word processing so that we can research about chickens and so we can teach others about what our chicks need.
