My Students

I teach at a Title I school in west Harlem. Many of the students receive free lunch. Our students come from various cultural backgrounds. However, many of the students in our school do not have exposure to a variety of experiences outside their neighborhood. That's why we try to expose our students to a variety of experiences.

This project is going to benefit not just one class, but our entire 3rd grade of approximately 60 students.

My Project

We have been making a conscious effort as a school to include more STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) activities both in our classrooms, and our school. We want to expose our students to the larger world community, and at the same time help them to have access to opportunities in these various fields in which they may choose to work one day.

Many studies have shown that students who are female or who come from minority backgrounds are underrepresented in STEM majors.

This could possibly be from lack of exposure to opportunities in these fields, and students having lack of exposure to careers in these fields in which they might find interest. We, as a school, want to open the doors of opportunity in these fields to our our students.

Our 3rd grade has been given the amazing opportunity to pilot a school partnership with the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, CT for the 2016-2017 school year. This school partnership, while it is an amazing opportunity for our students, is also very expensive, especially including the cost of bus transportation.

As a culminating activity for the partnership this year, we will be taking a field trip to the Maritime Aquarium, where students will go on an interactive tour of the aquarium, as well as participate in a 2 hour marine life study cruise. This project will cover the cost of bus transportation for this trip to the Maritime Aquarium.
