This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Reading is an important skill that all students should value. During silent reading my students struggle to find books that are at their reading level. The books we currently have are not meeting their needs. My students show a high interest in reading, but get frustrated if the level is to high.
My students are in 3rd grade and live in a struggling urban neighborhood in Pennsylvania.
The public elementary school that they attend serves four hundred-fifty students. Over 85% of the student population falls below the poverty level. Therefore, my students are eligible to receive a free lunch from the school. My students are caring and energetic, and they love to learn. They are all at different academic levels.
My Project
My students will use the Fiction Lexile Leveled Books Library during silent reading. They will be able to read these books on their own, then take an AR assessment. The AR assessment will allow my students and myself to view their comprehension level of the book they read. These assessments encourage my students to read, they love taking AR assessments. With the correct books my students will feel more conformable and confident reading on their own.
These books will improve my students reading ability.
They will be more excited and confident about reading. Reading skills will help my students become life long learners. They will want to reading and discover more independently. This will help them through elementary school, high school, college, and adulthood.
