Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.

My students are creative, clever and very spontaneous.

I like my classroom to be a hands-on, fun learning environment.

When you walk into my classroom you immediately see learning occurring. Children are engaged in small group projects, building interesting structures with blocks, and determining what sinks and what floats at the water table. I like to ask questions, pointing out children's successes and guiding learning. I want my room to have a sense of purpose, organization, and excitement.

My Project

These materials will enhance my students learning environment by setting them up for success. Reggio materials must be aesthetically pleasing, natural (wood/ceramic/metal rather than plastic) to trigger the interest of the child and invite him to play. They must call to their senses (which usually is achieved by the fact that Reggio classrooms use natural items as well as authentic materials).

Reggio inspired materials must be open-ended.

What are open-ended materials? Simply materials that can be transformed, that comes to life in the hands of a child. Materials that require the child to use their imagination or their experiences.

Here is the beauty of the open-ended materials: they enhance the play experience because the child is a lot more involved in the process of playing (imagining, solving a problem, finding a solution, creating, innovating, discussing, explaining.)
