This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students get really engaged in learning math when they are given the opportunity to be creative through hands-on learning.

This coming school year I will be teaching 10th- through 12th-grade students who are enrolled in my Pre-Calculus and Advanced Placement Calculus classes.

I also sponsor our school's extracurricular club MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement).

The communities where my students come from are low-income communities whose average household income is well below the state median income. Despite this adversity, my students are resilient and eager to learn. For many of them, access to technology resources and opportunities to print completed work in color is available only in the classroom.

My Project

Visualizing 3D solids that are generated by revolving the area bounded by two curves across an axis of revolution, or solids that have a basic geometric shape as a known cross-section is extremely difficult for my students. In this project, students will use colored pens to draw the base of a solid on a scaled axis. Each student will be assigned a square, rectangle, semicircle, or isosceles or equilateral triangle as their known cross-section. They will use the colored cardstock to create at least seven slabs that will then be glued to the base on the white cardstock. The result will be various 3D models that will allow students to visualize this complex idea of calculating the volume of a solid using calculus.

That impact that holding a model in your hands in order to visualize a concept is far greater than observing the model generated through an animation.

The materials funded through this project will allow students to create a model that will be used to visualize and understand a difficult concept in calculus. As a class, we will end up with a collection of models that will enhance the understanding of volumes and the calculus involved for all students.
