This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I would like for all of my kids to love math. I want to motivate kids to work for me so they can become better at math. Some kids already have that built-in motivation while others don't. I believe a 3D printer may provide that motivation for some students.
My school is located in a city and about 60% of our population is considered low income.
We have a diverse population of learners including gifted learners and special needs children. I teach 7th and 8th grade math students from all academic levels. I believe that any child can learn, so I push each and every one of them to do their absolute best in math.
My Project
My students need a Makerbot 3D Mini Printer and 23 filament spools for our math classroom. The first thing I would like to do with the 3D printer is have a contest. I will encourage my students to create designs that their fellow students can vote on. I would like to start with winners this year and continue to have a set of objects to show future classes. This will help get the already motivated child to explore designing on their own and share their experiences with our class. I would like to use the 3D printer to create objects that we can use during our units on scale and also geometry. This will also expose some of my less motivated kids to this technology and hopefully get them excited about it.
I believe that the 3D printer can be an addition to the classroom that will motivate my students to dive into more technology.
I have gifted learners who would love to start designing and see the results. I have other learners who have never been exposed to anything like this. The 3D printer may help motivate them to dive deeper into math.
