Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom uses project-based learning. Students work collaboratively to solve complex, real-world problems. The activities are very hands-on, and we use many materials. Students regularly present their ideas to class, ask questions, and share their thinking.

The fundamental aim of our school is to teach students to use their minds well and prepare them to lead productive, socially useful, and personally satisfying lives.

The school's academic program stresses intellectual development and political/social involvement in our society. Five "habits of mind" are stressed: (1) helping students learn to critically examine evidence (2) to be able to see the world through multiple viewpoints - to step into other shoes (3) to make connections and see patterns (4) to imagine alternatives (What if? What else?); and finally, (5) to ask, "What difference does it make? Who cares?" These five are at the heart of all our work, along with sound work habits and care and concern for others: habits of work and heart. The curriculum affirms the central importance of students learning how to learn, how to reason, and how to investigate complex issues that require collaboration, personal responsibility and a tolerance for uncertainty.

My Project

We have been discussing how they can design projects by using mathematics as a tool to describe the world. Specifically, they will soon do a project that explores how surface area and volume are affected by scaling. Ultimately, they choose a real animal and make a small scale model. They use the model to predict actual measurements and features of the full-sized animal. In the past, students have made these models out of cardboard paper, but we are very excited to design them digitally. This will add a very important and relevant skill of digital readiness to the project.

The “Shrinking a Real Animal” project has always been an engaging favorite of the students.

They love that they get to choose their own animal and design it. However, by learning how to write mathematical code to make the prisms, cones, spheres, and cylinders will add a whole new component of mathematical thinking to the project.
