My Students

I teach Media Arts to grades 6-8 in a dynamic program where students are empowered to communicate ideas about issues that affect them in their school and community. Using digital photo, video, animation, and other art/tech endeavors, students make meaning through dialogue and creative expression.

My 6th-8th grade students come to my Media Arts class excited to learn and create using cutting-edge technology and software.

60% of my students receive free or reduced lunch, while my school serves a diverse student body comprised of African-American, Hispanic, White, and Asian students from many different countries and socio-economic backgrounds. Since not all students have access to technology at home, it is important that they learn to be active producers of media in my class rather than just passive consumers. Students are so eager to express their ideas, have their voices heard and participate in our digital world. My Media Arts lab provides a safe space for students to experiment with emerging technology, take risks, and hone their digital skills. Students also create and share their work through our classroom blog.

My Project

While envisioning skills that students will need in future careers, the ones we talk about most are creative problem solving, learning from failure rather than getting discouraged, and being able to work both independently and collaboratively to achieve a goal. To have students engage in these practices, we have embraced problem-based learning and the maker movement to get students involved in STEAM projects (incorporating Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math). Last summer, I collaborated with our public library to pilot STEAM projects with middle schoolers, and our 3D design and printing course was by far the most popular and innovative! While students are able to design 3D items and architectural models using programs such as Photoshop, Tinkercad, Google Sketchup, and Minecraft, the most exciting part for students is to actually use a 3D printer to bring their designs to life. I'd like to make that experience a reality for my students by getting a 3D printer in our lab.

By having access to 3D printing, students will be able to participate in the full design thinking process, by creating their ideas on the computer, prototyping them, making changes, then printing their final products and using them in their everyday lives.

I think the thrill of watching the 3D printer in action and being a part of the entire creation process will inspire confidence in many of our students to seek out further learning opportunities and jobs in STEAM areas.
