3D Printer to Help Make 'Hands-on' Learning for Abstract Concepts

Help me give my students the technology to create 3D printing into their projects for greater connection to the content and hands-on learning, and to incorporate technology into all areas of their educational learning.

My Project

I am requesting the 3D printer to help students to find or create, 3D artifacts that will increase the understanding of more difficult topics in science. Groups can create meiosis models in cell division to show and explain how this cellular process occurs. Students can create the pieces and then set them up and use them to explain the process.

Students can also use the 3D printer to create the stages of growth with their invertebrates, to show the stages they move through.

They could make models of the rivers we help to restore in Environmental Science. These can be used in the presentations to show the observer what is being explained.

In physical science, students can create models of trebuchets, and show their understanding of how simple machines work. They will not only end the unit with an understanding from directly 'doing' the science by creating their own materials, but the student will gain that connection to the world by making those connections through hands-on learning.

This is special because I am at an alternative school. I am the only science teacher, and I am given a yearly science budget of whatever I am able to pull out of my own account. Having a 3D printer in the class would allow my students and me to expand our lab investigations because we could create some of our own materials. I would be able to supply the PFA spools for creating the designs, but the printer would open so many doors for my students to learn and retain many science concepts that they would otherwise find too difficult to grasp.
