My Students

My physiology students love hands on activities. So much so that I have transformed my physiology curriculum into a student centered project based course. Through the use of inquiry and project based learning I have seen my students come alive and really enjoy learning about the human body.

The students at my school are amazing.

They are bright, talented and creative. Even when faced with challenging tasks they rise to meet the challenge, not only succeeding but excelling along the way. Students in my classroom come from all over the city and have diverse backgrounds, yet they manage to work together when challenged to do so. By providing my students with brand new technology I hope to stimulate their creativity even more, and at the same time encourage them to work together to face new challenges as they learn how to design and create in a 3D space.

My Project

In furnishing my classroom with a 3D printer, filament and printer tape necessary to keep it running, I see a million new possibilities. However, I want to begin small so I have a few specific tasks and activities in mind. One particular activity I have been working on is a biomedical engineering project. Using 3D printing technology my students will be able to design and prototype prosthetic appendages, complete with articulating joints. Through this project the students would gain first hand knowledge of not only the physiology of the musculoskeletal system, but also the engineering design cycle, an important aspect of the Next Generation Science Standards. I foresee the project branching out to include the design and prototyping of other body parts, such as artificial hearts or kidneys. I believe the possibilities are endless.

This technology would really benefit my classroom.

My students do such a great job making due with the limited resources they often have, that I know the access to a 3D printer will not go to waste. I hope that incorporating engineering and 3D modeling in my classroom will help to inspire those students that are hard to reach, yet also generate even more interest and passion in those students that are already engaged in the learning process.
