Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"This is more exciting than video games!" An unexpected comment from a student engaged in 3D design. The problem to solve? Find a new home for humanity. Our student-researchers realized Earth's carrying capacity for humans was fast approaching. Their solution? Colonize space itself. Their task? Build a 3D-printed model of a space settlement in low-Mars-orbit. Close to the asteroid belt, Mars was a perfect solution to our growing demand for mineral resources. Their audience? NASA scientists and engineers who would judge the feasibility of their settlement.

"What if NASA actually likes our ideas?" This was exactly what I wanted them to ask.

The "What ifs" are essential to our practice here, not just the "How does" or "What is" inquires. We capitalize on the diversity in our classrooms, wanting students from all backgrounds to search for answers and generate ideas together to solve one fundamental problem at a time. We are a colorful school with a broad mix of cultural and racial identities. Our classrooms are filled with students from mostly low- and mid-SES families. Two of our four classes are ICT, while the others are inclusion, partnered with local D75 schools. We believe in progress through diversity.

My Project

Bringing 3D printing to my STEM classroom has been a long dream of mine as a 6th-grade science teacher here in New York City. Not only is 3D printing revolutionizing the fields of robotics, biotechnology, medicine, and tech industries, it is a quickly evolving technology that very few students have any experience with as they enter college, let alone middle schoolers. By exposing them to online 3D software, such as TinkerCad through Autodesk or SketchUp, where they can learn how to create 3D objects or construct virtual buildings, they are gaining a skill set that has become critical for future industries. Through this exposure, many begin to fantasize about careers in the field of creation itself, promoting self-confidence and interest in the STEM fields.

"My dad said he used to have a class called 'Woodshop' when he was in school where they got to actually make things!" Last year, when I heard one of my students say this to me, it made me pause and recognize the hard truth in his statement.

What do our kids make with their hands in school these days? Sure, they create beautiful projects and come up with fascinating science fair experiments, what are they designing, crafting, engineering and taking home? I want to change that, where they can begin this "lost art" at the start of their middle school experience. I do not just want my classroom to be a place of science, I want it to be a place of creation and imagination.

Your generous donations would go towards outfitting my classroom with three additional chromebooks with large screens so that I can extend 3D design options to more students over the course of the year! Thank you for your consideration!
