3D Design and Prototyping

My students need 3D printer and different types of filament to print their designs and explore emerging careers.

My Students

"3D printing has digitized the entire manufacturing process." - Peter Diamandis When you walk into my classroom it is easy to see how much the students enjoy having the ability to be creative.

My students are awesome!

They are energetic, enthusiastic, and always do their best both in the classroom and community. We are a family, and family takes care of each other. Our school is located in the "fruit belt" of Michigan. Many of my students come from financially stressed families while others come from very affluent families. Regardless of their socioeconomic background, our students have continuously increased their ACT test scores year after year. Last year, we were awarded "Best High Schools Silver Medal Award" by U.S. News. Students in my class also receive 4 college credit hours through a Direct Credit program at Southwestern Michigan College.

My Project

My students currently are able to use the most up-to-date Computer Aided Drafting and Design software to create solutions to real world problems. With the addition of a 3D printer, they will be able to have a way to output their designs. They will learn about form, function, and ergonomics. Besides being exposed to engineering and design, students will also be exploring the medical uses of 3D printing in occupational therapy and prosthetics.

I recently had a student in my woodworking class that lost her right hand and forearm in a horseback riding accident.

My high school design students worked with occupational therapist students from Western Michigan University to create devices that the student used to be successful in the woodworking class. Having a 3D printer in my classroom would allow my students to test their designs; more importantly, it will allow them to explore nontraditional career paths.
