I teach a fabulous group of First Graders that are inspiring, motivating and fun to teach. They are the future readers, writers, mathematicians, computer analysts, engineers, artists, and musicians of the world.
I teach in a large, diverse, K-8 high poverty school in an urban area of a large city in Pennsylvania that experiences crime.
Our school receives Title I funding and the entire school is eligible for free breakfast and lunch. The students who come to school eager to learn are from various living situations such as single parents, foster homes, homeless shelters, or extended family living. I am dedicated to meeting their needs daily, along with building their self-esteem and confidence.
My Project
My students are filled with curiousity. They ask how and why things work the way that they do. We have very limited access to technology in school and most of the children do not have technology at home. We need 2 laptops to explore and research the answers to their questions. The touchscreens and art supplies will be used to create artistic projects based on what the children explore. We are currently learning about matter in science, keyboarding in technology, and adding doubles facts in math. But with these laptops, students can create their own learning experiences during independent work time. I chose mutlicultural paper and markers to express their individuality. We need printer ink to print some of the things that we research and create. We are excited to learn 21st century skills to help us get career ready in the science, technology, engineering and art fields. It's never too early to start.
By infusing more technology and art into their day, these laptops will ignite a new level of learning within my students.
Aside from the cognitive growth that your gift will enable, you will help with the development of the children's belief in themselves to think and grow.
To each child in our classroom, your gift will also show them the strength of human kindness, that our learning community is bigger than our neighborhood. Our hope is that along with these exciting resources, my students will gain a feeling of wanting to give back by putting great effort into learning and growing. They are our future. 2, 4, 6, 8, we want to learn with STEAM and cannot wait!
