Arachnid-man & the New Mut-Ants! A Super STEAM project!
My students need 10 digital microscopes and 10 preserved insects & arachnids, so they can study the amazing anatomy of bugs up close and use their observations to create realistic insect-based sculptures!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Study the science of art. Study the art of science" - Leonardo Da Vinci. Empowering students through art to learn biology and anatomy is the goal of our new Biological Arts Design Engineering (BADE) course. And we need an Infestation of Bugs!
Our Biology Engineering Arts Science Technology (BEAST) is a STEAM program in which students study art, biology and physics through the lens of the film and effects industries to innovate and create animatronics - machines that move like living creatures.
Our student body ranges across many socioeconomic levels and cultural backgrounds (with many Title I and minority students). Their backgrounds vary widely from "high achieving" students who plan to move on to four year colleges and universities (including Ivy league schools, film schools, and art schools) to other students who struggle with grades, work after school to help support their families. All our kids want to believe that they can have a future in the Arts and Sciences!
My Project
Many superheroes & supervillains use bugs as a source of their super powers. Spider-man for examples was bitten by a radioactive spider that mutated him! There are many more beside just "Spidey" including Black Widow, Scorpion, the Green Hornet, the Blue Beetle, and the Tick. But despite these mutations to their genotypes, they never seem to have an changes to their phenotypes.
Using these digital microscopes & samples, students will study real arachnids & insects up close, observe their anatomy , and then practice "speculative biology" - in which they blend these features with human ones to create clay models depicting what a real "Arachnid-Man" or other bug-hero might look like with actual phenotypes affecting their anatomy!
We will then cast these sculpts, and mold foam latex to create final products ready for realistic painting and attach them to machines that make them move and give life to these new "Mut-ants"!
