My students need to understand the role trade has played in shaping of our modern world! Earning classroom cash for their academic work, they can "buy" authentic Roman coins, wax seal sets, candy and prizes!
Our students are a perfect blend of multicultural and socioeconomic diversity. Many come from homes where English is a second language. Among the languages spoken on our campus are Spanish, Hindi, Arabic, Portuguese, Vietnamese, and even Romanian. The units covered in our 7th grade World History Class touch on almost everyone's heritage. My goal is to highlight global cultures (following state curriculum), foster tolerance, understanding, awareness, as well as to spark the interest of my students. When a student makes a connection from headline news with our course of study, I feel a sense of accomplishment.
My Project
Our school goal this year is to celebrate success! In addition to verbal praise, I want to provide incentives for students to come prepared to learn and participate in class discussions. Since the Silk Road is a major part of our world history curriculum in 7th grade, I would like to set up an enticing array of prizes, like a magnetic floating globe, Harry Potter wax seal kits, authentic Roman coins, a Chinese ink stamp, oriental carpet bookmarks, candy, and LED stress balls.
I want students to understand that doing your schoolwork can lead to financial success!
At the end of each trimester, I would like to host an auction where students can spend their cash, and also have a raffle to include students who have made efforts to work hard and improve their grades! I hope to infuse my students with enthusiasm and incentives to succeed, learn the value of earning money, and collaborate with each other to help students who struggle.
