Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In this project I am asking for materials to help me teach social-emotional learning skills to my students. We currently have a program called Second Step that we use to teach social-emotional learning. I am realizing that this specific group of students, who were in kindergarten when the pandemic began (thus ending that year in March), were virtual either majority or all of their first grade year, and this year have had to wear masks and socially distance from their peers and adults, are lacking in a lot of social-emotional skills. Skills that they usually learn in the earlier grades, such as being able to identify and talk about how they are feeling, how to problem solve for themselves, and having low self-efficacy.

Social-emotional learning (SEL) is vital in helping children become adults that can manage relationships, make responsible life decisions, achieve personal goals, and develop healthy identities.

SEL has always been an important part of my classroom curriculum because I've seen the need in my students. This year has shown me the group of children growing up during the pandemic have even higher needs for more in-depth teaching. I would like to have the materials from the "A Little Spot of..." series because I like how it breaks down emotions, feelings, and self-help skills in a age appropriate manner that the students enjoy!
