Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Flying toys in the classroom? Yes! Imagine the excitement and engagement as students see computer programs that they write come to life and fly! Drones can help students work collaboratively, think critically and logically while solving real world problems.

I work with a wonderful group of second graders who are energetic, inquisitive, and highly motivated to learn.

They come from diverse backgrounds and have a wide range of learning needs, including students with learning disabilities, English learners, and students who are gifted. We are an urban school located in one of the largest school districts in the country. Although there has been a major decrease in funds for our school over the past few years, our school community has worked together to provide our students with a quality education and we are proud to be named a "California Distinguished School". Yet, decreasing funds also means fewer resources for our students. Technology in our school is antiquated and in need of upgrading. These drones will allow students to interact with a new technology that would otherwise be unavailable for them at school.

My Project

The materials I'm requesting will allow students to have the opportunity to learn coding skills in an interactive and engaging way. Coding is a skill that students need to have because basic coding is simply understanding sequencing and logic. It helps with critical thinking, problem solving, and perseverance. My students will have the opportunity to work collaboratively to learn coding skills to precisely move the drone by using a block coding program in which they write the correct code in order for it to work and accomplish a given task. This will reinforce some basic coding that the students have been introduced to and will introduce more advanced math concepts. They will be given simple tasks which will become more complex as they progress in ability. As teams accomplish these, they will learn a coding language which is used every day in companies around the world. Working cooperatively, they will be able to see first hand what their ideas translated in code actually look like.

My students will gain real life experience in using coding to work through real world problems and will be motivated to do much more by programming and flying these drones.

They will be learning and having fun at the same time. Funding this project will help my current and future students to get excited about both math and coding. Coding is a valuable skill that students need to have for future endeavors. Everyone needs to be able to think logically and work through problems.
