My Students

Do you remember how exciting it was to run under a floating parachute as a child? Or the way the light looked as it was filtered through its many color panels? There is something very special and almost magical about parachute play and I know that my students would benefit greatly from it.

Our class is a Pre-K for students between the ages of 3-5 with special needs.

Their disabilities differ, but most are placed on the Autism spectrum. We are located on an elementary school campus and are the only Pre-K in the district. My students have their days, planned full of interventions, assessments and therapy sessions. They are all such little troopers that face great difficulties daily. When they come to school, I want them to be excited and happy. School should be challenging, but there's no reason it can't also be fun! Despite their disabilities, the students in my classroom are just like any other preschooler. They love coming to school and exploring their environment in hands-on ways. We love music, dancing, and art (especially the messy kind!), but our favorite time of the day is story time! If you were to visit our classroom, you would probably be introduced to our favorite book, "Pete the Cat," within the first five minutes of your arrival (probably sooner!).

My Project

My students need a parachute, Ribbon Wands, Flying Disc Frisbee, and Parachute Fun CD for active play toys in order to add enrichment to the time they spend playing outdoors, while also promoting social skills. As students with Autism, one of our main goals is to improve our student's social skills. Providing toys for active play time that encourage group participation will help to improve my student's ability to interact socially with their peers. I have requested a parachute with enough handles to accommodate 12 children at a time. This will help my students to practice working as a group, while also encouraging cooperative play skills. I have also requested a CD with games that can be played with a class sized parachute. In addition to these materials, I have requested ribbon dancers to add enrichment to our active play time, and foster social and spatial awareness.

Proper social development is a key indicator in how well a child will do upon entering Kindergarten.

Students need to be able to work collaboratively with one another. By providing my PreK students with the materials necessary to foster proper social skills, they are being given the opportunity to succeed throughout their educational careers. Thank you so much for your consideration!
