My Students

Do you remember being bored silly by a teacher who was forced to follow a certain curriculum and would just drone on and on?? I don't remember finding second grade interesting nor challenging and I want to ensure that my second grade students have a completely different opportunity.

My sensational second grade students are predominantly from inner-city Los Angeles, low-income and limited English speaking homes.

Being able to better meet the different learning modalities while I teach my students will enable them to better access the curriculum.

My Project

I have asked for a wide variety of mathematics and language comprehension games which the students will be able to use to further enhance their learning beyond the state mandated curriculum. I previously taught first grade for 11 years and am able to use many of the materials I purchased for my first grade classes. I found this worked better in the first semester of second grade and now they are ready for more challenging options. I plan on introducing the games to the students either myself or through my aide. After this the students will know the basic rules and premises and therefore will they will be able to play more independently and with only minimal guidance.

This project is important to both myself and my students because I don't believe all learning has to be through a textbook and tedious.

I have seen children have more "AHA" moments through small group interactions with hands-on materials than I could count. I really want to continue to bring this fun and necessary learning opportunity to my students.
