Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work in a low-income community in New York City and teach an ICT classroom filled with 30 curious, fun ... and wiggly ... second-grade students. The kids love when the classroom environment is colorful, comfortable, and community-oriented.

My kids like to move a lot and they love being able to make their own decisions about where and how they work best in the classroom.

My goal is to provide them with the choices that will help them succeed.

My Project

With flexible seating, my second-grade students can take charge of their learning. During independent work times, they can choose a seat and/or location in the classroom that works best for them. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in keeping them motivated and focused.

My students are more engaged and can better focus when they are given a choice of seating that allows them to wiggle (safely) while they work.

The seats that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices. The Kore Wobble Stools and Gaiam Balance Balls allow students to rock — without tipping over. These seats are all lightweight and students can easily carry them to different areas of the classroom.

I have seen how seating choices and being able to move while they work has had a positive impact on my students' ability to focus, and makes them less disruptive to others ... while adding a dose of fun.
