Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Students should be motivated to read while using various strategies! This September I will teach a 2nd grade ESL class in a high-need community. Already faced with the challenge of having a language barrier, students should be able to experience literature through different means of instruction. Having taught ESL students in the past, I've realized how enthusiastic readers become when using our classroom listening center.

There is only one problem...my class only has 6 books to listen to on cd. Not being able to supply them with resources they've needed in the past, I've decided to make that a priority this school year. Often times, teachers have loaned us books to use for the week and we've been very grateful. While this has been a great help, collecting books and cds has been very time consuming.

It will be greatly appreciated if these various books and cds could become part of our classroom listening center. Students will have something different to look forward to every week in our listening center. They will also be able to complete various graphic organizers showing comprehension of both the stories they listened to as well as their writing skills. Literacy is a great part of our students education and they must be able to find a way to increase their reading skills, but must be able to be provided with proper resources as well.

Your help will ensure that my students are given the opportunity to enjoy literacy and enhance their reading levels and skills.
