Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have spoken to many of my students and they can only remember one book. To Kill A Mockingbird. They loved that book! They keep asking me to bring in something that we can read that will make them want to read again, so I am here hoping you can help me do this.

My students are the most colorful cast of players I have ever met.

They are endlessly entertaining and genuinely invested in wanting to learn more. This had made my job easier and I in turn want to give them the resources they need so that they can achieve not only the school's goal for them, but their own personal ones as well.

My Project

Texas houses a mixture of students who all seem to want to escape. Part of my charge is to make sure these children go to college and to instill in them the understanding that there is more out there. One of the easiest way to achieve this is through reading. However my students have not yet achieved a love of reading. Some of the still hate it. I want to bring new material to them which will help them find out the simple joy of sitting down with a book. Because I also have a lot of English Language Learner I have selected comics that translate Shakespeare into a more manageable dialect for them. These comic books will help them (and other students as well) preview the texts before we jump into our big Shakespeare unit and prove that reading The Bard's words is not a daunting task.

Early in the year one of my students showed interest in reading a detective story.

I went and bought him a book to read during our Silent Sustained Reading time. When I gave it to him he said, "Wow, I've never held a brand new book before." Help me make sure this never happens again.
