My Students

I currently teach at a Title I school that serves inner-city children, from Pre K to 8, in Baltimore City. While my students are often met with inadequate resources and access to opportunities, they come to school every day excited to learn and ready to excel! My students come from a range of backgrounds, with an equal amount of diverse needs.

Due to our school being on the outskirts of the city, many of my students are severely impacted by the negative issues that infiltrate our city, such as violence, poverty and poor access to various resources.

Although my students have a high passion toward learning, their excitement is often overshadowed by a lack of resources. Even with a dedicated staff who is set on providing our students with quality opportunities and resources, there is still a high need of materials that our classroom needs.

My students are more than capable of functioning, on and above grade level, and engaging in inquiry based learning and creation, but they need the necessary technology and resources to do so.

My Project

Learning is a constantly revolving door, with more and more opportunities requiring the full use and knowledge of technology. With access to up to date technology, our lessons can be even more engaging. In our science classroom, the need to use tablets, and fully loaded iPads will increase the exposure to high quality hands-on, inquiry based learning. The tablets also allow students of this generation to learn in a way that is more comfortable to them: using technology! The usage of these materials would also make learning games, such as Kahoot, more intriguing as more students will have access to a device, versus a 1:6 ratio.

At the end of each science unit students are presented with a task that requires them to go through each step of the Engineering Process.

By having access to the iPads students will have the opportunity to research and compose drafts of their project with the built-in high graphics visuals, functions and editing capabilities that they possess. Additionally, there have been many activities that could have been more engaging had my students been able to take their learning outdoors or throughout the building. Having iPads and tablets will enable our class to be mobile and flexible.

With current technology the learning possibilities are endless and I know that it will drive my students to enjoy learning even more.
