My Students

My students begin their class routine by either reading independently or by completing a quick write about what they read previously. I would like my students to show growth as readers and writers, but more than this I really would love for them to "be the change they want to see in the world!"

I teach at a school whose population is about 95% Title 1.

This means that most of the students are economically disadvantaged. They come to class not only thinking about the assignments they are expected to complete by the end of the day, but also enter the classroom burdened with the many worries and challenges they have in their households. Nevertheless, they come with eagerness to learn with their peers. Our school is in the process of implementing the program The Leader in Me with the hope that this will create a big shift in the way our students see themselves as human beings with leadership potential. Although our school lacks some resources, supplies, and materials that will make teaching more efficient and effective, our teachers are committed to educating our youth and we do this every day with passion and fidelity. This is the reason why our students feel loved and are willing to soak up the knowledge they need to become better citizens of the world.

My Project

My students will benefit greatly from the advantages of technology like a Kindle to encourage and motivate them to read and become engaged in their reading. My students who need accommodations with their eyesight can easily adjust the font size, the background color, and the back light intensity. With features like text to speech and easily accessible dictionary, my second language learners will also have tools to help them speed up their learning of new vocabulary words and improve their fluency. I envision a classroom that caters to both the traditional and the modern means of reading, hence, I thought of this project to make it possible for my students to be exposed to the best of both worlds!

Research on the use of e-readers like Kindles have pointed out that these gadgets can spark interest and get students to read in a format that they can truly appreciate and more likely gain deep, meaningful reading experiences.

This is the vision I have for my students - I want them to enjoy reading and be engaged readers. With this new-found enjoyment and engagement in reading, they will attain success in any field they may choose to venture into in the future.
