My Students

I make my classroom a great place for learning by having a research based instructional model incorporating the use of different learning stations where my students learn the different skills targeted by common core standards. For example, when they go to the small group discussion station they use

My middle school students are struggling readers who are diagnosed with specific learning disability or multiple disabilities with behavior concerns.

Most of them are in the beginning reading level and are struggling in phonetics, phonemic awareness, reading comprehension, and vocabulary skills. My school is a Title 1 school with 99% free and reduced priced lunch, 24% of the population are special needs students, and we have 1% who are English Language Learners. We have academic enrichment programs, wellness and fitness, and arts and culture. We also have an active community partnerships and active family and community engagement. During the past two years, my school has been engaged in a challenging academic plan to integrate the International Baccalaureate curriculum and an extensive building renovation; this year is our authentication year. I am proud to be one of handful teachers who are founding members of my school!

My Project

The biggest "Aha" moment in the classroom that I have experienced is when teaching and learning in my classroom became focused on pushing the students to become good readers so that they can be better prepared for their experience in high school, college, & beyond. To be college and career ready, however, students need to be proficient in reading complex texts independently in a variety of content areas, including history, social studies, science, and technical subjects. We have books of different genres that will be appealing to the interest of the students. We want the reading center to be a cozy place to read! We can create an inviting and enjoyable listening center by making a comfortable space. Using a rug with a map of the world that will inspire my students to become global readers can make the center more appealing. Instead of using the traditional books on tape, we can use MP3 players for listening centers. It will excite students to use current technology when

I have seen more kids rise to the challenge than struggle when given the right resources, supports, and time to master the skills.

This is what our reading intervention classroom is about, being able to encourage ALL students to read on their level, analyze, reflect, create, connect and collaborate making them 21st century ready for the demands of 21st century learning. Your donations will help our reading center become more inspiring for our 21st century students. Our motto: success no excuses!
