My Students

My students have special needs including Autism, cognitive impairment, emotional and learning disability. I work with my students to help them with literacy, reading comprehension, expression, grammar, and social-emotional development. My students need more assistance and time to learn new skills, which greatly impacts their academic development. They know that they struggle, they have low frustration tolerance and difficulty sitting and attending lessons for longer periods of time. My students need skills broken down and repeated in order to learn. Electronic devices, such as an iPad can provide our students with the motivation and an engaging way to facilitate their goals. Because they struggle with skills and abilities that come naturally to a typically developing child, they greatly benefit from engaging activities that facilitate learning.

My Project

A new iPad will reinforce and motivate my students during therapy. It will be used as a tool to help them complete their assignments. It will provide an engaging way for them to conduct research, develop outlines, work collaboratively on a topic (i.e. research NY landmarks and significance for book publishing project). An iPad can be used in many ways to reinforce skills and facilitate language development. They will be able to create both independent and group projects in order to show a true understanding of concepts. All students will be able to access learning through technology on a daily basis. My students come from various cultural backgrounds, creating a truly unique and diverse group, and many lack access to the technology that they need. I believe my students should not be held back because of a lack of funds. They deserve to explore and learn on the same level as students who have this access.
