I teach fourth grade math, science and social studies at a magnet school for gifted and talented students. I have two classes, one is designated gifted (achieved the required score on psychological testing) and one that is designated talented (not classified as gifted but still pretty advanced learners). Our magnet designation means that we only take students at the beginning of the year. Families must fill out an application and go through a lottery process to enter our school.
The misconception in our district is that my students do not have to work hard since they are gifted/advanced learners.
Our students work very hard to maintain their grades. They consistently want to do well. They show me this with their goal setting. "I want a perfect score on the test, because that will show how much I know" and "I want to get a perfect score because I got a perfect last year", are things that my students frequently share with me when we conference about their math work.
My students impress me everyday with their abilities. It is an honor to get to work with these bright, wonderful students.
We have tablets in my class that we use with the Seesaw application, which is a digital learning portfolio that students use to document their learning with peers and parents. We also use them for small group work in math and science. Now that we are using the tablets I realize how delicate and fragile they are and that I need to do something to protect them.
In order to protect these versatile learning tools we need cases and screen protectors to guard against the inevitable drops that will undoubtedly happen.
With the cases and screen protectors in place I can rest a little easier knowing that I will be able use the tablets with not only this class but also with many classes to come.
