My Students

My students start their school day eating breakfast in the classroom. All students have free lunch. For many, school is the only constant and stable place they have in their lives. I want it to be comfortable and welcoming. The carpet, pillows, and mobile teacher cart will help with this.

My students are mostly from low socio-economic families.

Learning is difficult for many because they are dealing with trauma or other needs issues that are a priority over learning. The concept of the 21st Century classroom is one that would benefit my students because they need a safe, comfortable place to learn. When given the right conditions, my students thrive. Sitting at a hard desk in an plastic chair all day isn't great for my kids. They thrive when they can lie or sit on the floor, move around, or be given a choice as to where they will learn best. That is why a carpet, pillows, and a mobile teaching cart (so I can move around to teach different groups) will benefit my students.

My Project

My students will use the carpet in two main ways. One will be as a meeting area for direct instruction, classroom discussions, or other times I need to meet with the whole class. It will also be a place they can use during independent time either for lying or sitting while completing class work. The pillows will either be used for lying on, leaning against, or sitting on if they want to learn on the floor. The mobile teacher cart will allow me to move around the room more easily to teach groups of students from different parts of the classroom.

Research shows students behaviors, productivity, and engagement increase in a 21st Century classroom.

Building a 21st Century classroom using the carpet, pillows, and mobile teaching cart will make a difference in the way my students learn, behave, and produce.
