My Project
Each year students in my 8th grade Social Studies class finish their year with the "20th Century Decades Project". After a few weeks of looking at important social, technological, and popular cultural events/people/locations/objects from the 20th century, students select a topic to research and build a 3-dimensional model.
Projects begin as a single sheet of cardboard.
They must work in groups to design, measure, and construct their model. This is a two-week process that stresses teamwork, attention to detail, creativity, and STEM principles.
This project yields the most creative projects completed by students all year. Many bring in their own supplies as they become invested in the creation of their project. They are able to apply their personal strengths to contribute to a group and apply their own cultural experiences to their project.
It is definitely the highlight of the academic year in my class. Many of the projects are used to decorate our library and classrooms. The following year, students begin asking about the projects they see and begin to look forward to their turn to create a project. I have even had high school students visit and remember the projects, oftentimes looking to see if theirs is still on display.
Thank you for your help in capping off the 8th-grade academic year for my students with a great project students will most definitely benefit from and remember!
