This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This is my first year teaching 5th grade in a self-contained classroom, which means I will be teaching every subject this year. I will be teaching my 23 students English Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies. I would like to create a 21st Century classroom for this mixed group of students that include a large group of students that are not only new to this school but also new to this country.

The classroom that will be their home for the upcoming school year has at this point nothing more than 21 desks and 21 chairs (yes I am short a few desks and chairs already), a teachers desk, two shelves one tall and one short, a teacher's desk and a broken metal cabinet.

These materials will turn this empty classroom into a place where these students will come everyday and learn about this city, state, country and world and of course about themselves.

In order for these students to gain what the Word Health Organization identifies as fundamental life skills they need a classroom environment that will motivate them to practice these skills daily. But at this moment this room is spacious but empty and this list of supplies are some of the things that they will need to help them successfully practice these fundamental life skills, so that they not only are able to complete this school year but have laid a strong foundation for their future.
