Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are artists who come from an extremely diverse backgrounds, representing countries from all over the world in our nation's capitol. These artists grow their knowledge and passion for the arts each year during their visual arts class from Pre-School through fifth grade here at our school.

My students are artists who are consistently learning and growing to be the most respectful, responsible, bi-lingual citizens and leaders in our community.

I have the honor and privilege of watching these young artists skills grow each year. Throughout the pandemic, each artist rose to the challenge and conquered online learning with limited resources and materials. These artists not only come to school to learn, but to share their views and experience in the world with others, and support each person in our school community to be the best version of themselves.

My Project

Our school building was remodeled and reimagined a few years ago to ensure students had a safe, welcoming environment, and to ensure it was a place where imaginations and learning thrived. We moved into our building and our art room had a beautiful brand new kiln! Just one year later when we were finally settled, the pandemic hit-and distance learning provided no opportunity for the artists to use or experience creating with clay!

This donors year project is a direct reflection of a goal I have set for myself as an educator in 2021: to user their artistic skills and open their minds to a new experience of creating three dimensionally, and using clay.

My students consistently ask with such eager looks in their eyes about when they will get to use clay. It is my goal this year to get all the materials necessary for a clay unit, and finally give at least my upper level elementary students the experience of using clay.

While the clay and glazes are consumable, and will need to be replaced, the other items in this project will reach well beyond just the students who use them this year. These materials will be used for years to come in order to provide students the experience of using clay in the visual arts room.
