Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My EL scholars aspire to be learners in every subject, but their low literacy holds them back. Their desire to learn science is overwhelming. By practicing reading comprehension through leveled science books my students can develop their curiosity while gaining the most important skill: reading.

My fourth grade scholars will change the world.

They will attend college and become immigration lawyers, fashion designers, soccer players, and doctors. They realize how their families work to raise them in the U.S. In TN, we have a diversity of cultures. My class includes English Learners from Mexico, Iraq, and Egypt. Twenty one out of my twenty two scholars are on free and reduced lunch. Our school is Title I and our classroom resides outside in a portable. My students are often exposed to violence. However, their economic status will not determine their futures. Together, they voted for our class motto to be “Reach our Goals.” Daily, they prove their dedication to our mission. They stay inside during lunch to write. Students ask for extra homework. They come Sundays for tutoring and seek out work for breaks. They devour non-fiction and readily recall facts from their books. Never could I have imagined fourth graders on a greater academic mission for their own success.

My Project

Students in fourth grade should be “reading to learn”, but my students are behind. Can you imagine a textbook for your grade level being completely incomprehensible? Due to their non-English language backgrounds, students in my class read primarily on kindergarten through third grade levels. A few exceptions read at their level or slightly above. We’ve come far, but our focus on reading has limited the time they spent learning science. It’s time we bridge this gap. Science leveled readers will allow my students to “read to learn” with their skill set. We will use these materials during our shared and independent reading blocks. Important reading skills like main idea and details, sequencing, author’s purpose, and others will all be taught through science texts. In addition, these resources will improve their reading and comprehension. My scholars will further develop their enthusiasm for science, while simultaneously improving their literacy.

In fourth grade, students learn exciting science, like how the earth changes and the life cycles of animals.

My students will be inspired by the wealth of information reading can bring to them through these resources. They will see that they can accomplish much by reading and will be motivated to continue their academic efforts. As they learn science, their reading abilities will improve. By supporting this project, you will combat one of the major problems in education today, the literacy gap.
