This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach kindergarten students in a high-need community in the Bronx. Parents can barely provide the students with necessary clothing and a backpack for school let alone the extra supplies that a child needs to start the school year.
The cost of living increases, poor national economy and citywide school budget cuts have squeezed the parent's financials, donor's support and school's budget allocation. All this directly affects our students.
Year after year I have seen their homework sheets stuffed into their bags or paper-folders that are falling apart. I would like to see them go home with one specially designated homework folder and a bookmark for their bedtime reading books.
We teachers give homework every day, but our students have no place to put the homework sheets. We make sure to tell them to read 20 minutes before bedtime every night, but forget that they have nothing to encourage them to do so, nor anything to earmark the page they read last.
Every kindergarten student needs two things: a homework folder to keep things as organized at home as they are in school and a bookmark to remind him/her and encourage them to read every night. Help them start their long journey as learners by providing these two simple yet very important things for them.
