Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Reading books is tons of fun! There are so many from which children can choose. Perusing particular prose and rhyme Is an excellent investment of kids’ time. Believe me, they’ll have nothing to lose. Imagine, though, children who are bright-eyed, very eager to read. You help them choose books that they love and those at which you know they’ll succeed. The children are pleased with their choices and they can tell you all about who did what, when, where and why. However, when one begins to read aloud to you, your heart goes out. You almost cry. Whatever she’s saying, how ever he’s reading is not what is in the book. You glance at the child, you eye the pages and at both you take a second look. You realize that the child does understand much of what her or she has read, But the pronunciation of the words is poor because out loud the words have never been said. Often kids think that they can say something just because they see words with their eyes. However, words borrowed from other tongues look one way, but sound another as if they are in disguise. Please help my 4th graders whose 1st languages, among many, are Spanish, Somali, Karen and Arabic. Supply them with books accompanied by CD’s to help make the English language—comprehension, spelling and pronunciation—stick! I teach 4th grade at an elementary school located on Chicago’s northwest side, which serves a high, low-income population with a 25% mobility rate. There are over 1,100 students enrolled in grades Pre-K through 6. Over 72% of the student body is Latino with 36.4% of the entire school being English Language Learners. Students at my school represent countries from all over the world, including Assyria, Bosnia, Laos, Mexico, Somalia, the Sudan and Vietnam. Thank you for considering my proposal.
