Help Mrs. Brand

My Students

Help us learn about our chemical world! Remember the first time you were able to learn about a whole new world, filled with atoms that were smaller than a speck of dirt, creating wonderful chemical reactions? I want my students to be able to experience that too.

My students are high energy, curious, and motivated individuals.

They attend a high school in a very tough part of Illinois. The high school is only in its second year of development; we now have freshman and sophomores added on to an already existing elementary school. The program is designed for the students to graduate in three years. The school day goes from 9am-5:10pm; they attend school on the regular, 9 1/2 month calendar year, and then in summer they attend an additional 8 weeks of summer school from 8:30am-3:30pm. It takes a unique individual to be a successful student in our program, because they attend school over 40 hours a week. We only allow 35 students per grade, so we can keep our student:teacher ratio low, in order for the students to obtain the most from our staff. They are a great group of adolescents and are filled with wonderful dreams and goals.

My Project

For this project I am asking for 9 ring stands and 9 rings to allow my students to perform two labs throughout the school year. In the first lab the students will be trapping thermal energy from a burning tea candle in a soda-can calorimeter and then they will calculate the heat of combustion. In the second lab the students will synthesize biodiesel from cooking oil. I also asked for 9 molecular model kits, so my students will be able to assemble molecules. Since we cannot visibly see the chemical makeup of molecules with our naked eye, it would be wonderful if my students we able to have many hands on experiences putting together 3-D models to understand what they look like and how they react with each other. The high school I work at was just established last year. Last year we started off with freshman, who took Biology. This will be the first time chemistry will be taught to the sophomores. Unfortunately, due to us just opening last year, we do not have any Chemistry equipment.

Science is an important subject for students to learn, and it's much more interesting when students have the ability to participate in experiments and hands on projects.

Unfortunately my school does not have many funds to put towards the science department. Since last year was the first year the school accepted high school students it has been a challenge to build a lab that allows the h.s. students to excel in learning about science. I would greatly appreciate your help with this challenge.
