Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a Gifted and Talented First grade class in a very low-income area. 90% of the students at my school receive a free lunch. The school is in an urban environment where students have very little interaction with the natural world. My students are very bright and eager to learn. They are proficient readers who read voraciously on every topic available.

I have six especially bright young boys who are fascinated with the natural world--bugs, insects, snakes, etc... They have read almost every science book in the classroom and are begging me to read more science books! I want to tap into their enthusiasm and bring it to the rest of the class by creating an engaging unit around Butterflies.

With the Butterfly Kit, I will create an interdisciplinary unit focusing on Butterflies. In addition to the Life Cycle of a Butterfly, we will study geography, humans effect on Butterflies for Earth Day, and use the patterns of a butterfly to study symmetry in Math Workshop.

Your gift will allow my students to watch one of nature's most amazing miracles right before their eyes! In the urban environment I teach in, contact with nature is so rare and this gift will be a memorable project in the education of my Gifted and Talented Students.
