My Students

Why aren’t there more people who look like me on TV? My students ponder this question and so do I. As a classroom of truly diverse students, my richly diverse classroom looks as if we are a part of the model U.N. However, my students do not see themselves or others who look like them in the media. My classroom of students who make up 5 different nations and 3 different languages, need an opportunity to see faces like their own in print. Many times they are able to write their ideas down in written language, but they need an opportunity to use visuals to express their opinion. Many of my students have not had an opportunity to use a camera or other technology due to their socio-economic status in the city of Chicago. My students are not able to use a camera on their own, and this, I am learning is a life-long skill and privilege.

My first graders are a functioning unit that works collectively for the better good of learning.

My students are from different backgrounds, economically, socially, ethnically and nationally. I am so excited when my students share the experiences of their families and friends. My students recently surveyed each other to find out where their family came from. Here is the consensus: 6 of my students are from Nigeria, 5 are African-American, 4 are Pakistani, 4 are Filipeno,3 are Biracial, 1 is Bosnian, 1 is Greek, 1 is Ghanna. My students live all around the city. Most of my students live on the north side of the city, however, I do have several students who have parents who make the commute from the far south and west side.

My Project

I am requesting that my students have 5 digital cameras by Kodak and the rechargeable batteries to accessories the cameras. My students love taking pictures, and I would love to incorporate photography with our writer's workshop. I notice that many of my students need a great visual picture to invigorate their writing. I believe if I can teach them how to take amazing photos and they can write about pictures with their own faces, they will create amazing stories. I also believe that providing my students with this skill and resource now, many of my students will be encouraged to write more and be inspired visually.

Your generous donation to this project will provide 28 students with the opportunity to learn how to take photographs and creatively write about those pictures.

There is research that shows that students of color rarely see positive forms of media that enforces the beauty of their own culture. Your generous donation would make a life-long impact on my students. I believe this project will impact students to be lifelong creative writers. Thank you!
