I work with a classroom full of 1st grade students, eager and willing to learn. The children I teach all live together in the same neighborhood. They love seeing their school friends outside of school. The first few years of these children's school experience has been greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic; students have only experienced online school or school with masks and social distancing - both factors make it hard for students to learn how to build relationships with their peers. My hope is to help them build strong social-emotional skills.
My Project
My students have been greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The first few years of these students' school experience has either been online or in-person with masks and social distancing - both factors making it hard for students to engage in meaningful conversations and practice problem solving skills. The items I have selected for this project will be used during choice-time in my classroom. Choice-time provides students with an opportunity to take control in their learning and it also allows them to communicate and learn with their peers. My hope is to use these materials to help students develop strong social-emotional and problem solving skills that are lacking due to the affects of COVID. I want my students to leave my classroom with strong social-emotional skills so they can build strong relationships, as well as have the mental capacity and stamina needed to deal with any problems or challenges they may face.
