1st Grade Alaskan Classroom Desperate for Variety of Quality Read-Alouds

My students need chapter books for me to read aloud to them. My 1st graders are new readers and still struggle with comprehension and visualization; hearing a story without pictures will strengthen skills!

My Students

My students live in an extremely rural Alaskan bush village. My students live in dual-language homes of English and Yupik Eskimo. Our weather is extreme to say the least. Life opportunities beyond the tundra are limited.

The neighborhood my students (and myself) live in does not have any activity options such as stores, movies, skate rinks, malls, playgrounds, parks, etc.

There are no banks, doctors, dentists, vets or other services that are taken for extreme granted. There are no roads in or out of Togiak, and there is no way in or out of the village other than a bush plane.

My students deserve and need the same educational tools available to other schools. Unfortunately, resources and money are limited and I am asking - no, begging - for you to help these kids any way that you can. Their needs are not large at all - they need simple supplies such as notebooks, folders, construction paper, and anything else you would typically find in a K/1st classroom. Their needs are so small that any amount, even a dollar, will add up and help me support their needs.

My Project

If this group of books that I carefully reviewed and selected for my 1st graders would become part of a new classroom library I am building, my students will have an excellent start to building a library from scratch in our small Alaskan town classroom.

Many students have picture books to sit down and flip through pages and see pictures and move on to the next book - but, the skill to sit and listen to a story being read to them - one without pictures - will greatly strengthen their visualization skills, which will help develop a strong grip on comprehension.

I really need some good books for to read to my students throughout the school year. These stories were picked mostly by my own memories of reading them to my children when they were younger and remembering the light in their eyes while listening.

We all appreciate all DonorsChoose.og has done for our small village classroom in the Alaskan bush and hope we can continue to build a successful learning environment! Thank you so much!
