Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in my school come from diverse backgrounds. A large percentage of my students come from low- income areas and have many financial problems. Not only do these students struggle financially but they are adolescences. So they are dealing with many different emotions, physically and socially. I see a student from the classroom and counselor point of view.

As a SAPIS Counselor (Substance Abuse Prevention Intervention Specialist) I see the students from a 360 point of view.

If you are unfamiliar of the role of a SAPIS Counselor, we are similar to a School Counselor but different. We are funded by OASAS (Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse) and work in NYC DOE Schools throughout the 5 boroughs of New York. We push into classes and teach prevention lessons that revolve around relationships, self-care, self-esteem, dating, conflict resolution, substance abuse, and more. As a middle school SAPIS Counselor we hold groups based on evidence based programs such as Voices and Safe Dates along with a peer leader groups. We also help when a student is in crisis and help out the school as much as we can.

My Project

Just these bare necessities will help my students a long way. These are the supplies we have run low on and need to replenish them. We don't want any student to feel uncomfortable or unprepared when entering a classroom without supplies.

Some of the supplies will also help keep the classrooms and offices clean to make the students feel safe.

Creating a clean environment will also encourage not only teachers but staff. With these supplies, the students will have the materials to learn.

When a student feels prepared for school, it increases their esteem to do better! No one wants to see a student without supplies. Students will use these supplies throughout the year.
