This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, they come to school every day to learn and be filled with knowledge.
Most of my students are being raised in single-parent households and receive free lunch based on their low SES.
These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day.
Students will be researching to understand and synthesize their First Amendment rights while reading various articles, court cases, and this novel. They will blend their research and readings, both fictional and informational, into a formal research essay and design campaign-style posters to inform the public of their rights.
This project will enhance my student's knowledge of History and help students better understand their rights.
It is essential that they understand their basic rights as they move through high school into the real world. By reading literature where these rights are jeopardized and exploring court cases that shaped our First Amendment rights, will help sharpen why it is important to be involved in social justice.
