My students are fantastic learners who walk through our doors from all walks of life. We are a rural school nestled in the Smoky Mountains. Many of our students never leave the county or state, so studying a book that describes students their age from 3 separate countries and situations opens their mind to a new world view.
My students are creative, kindhearted, and very driven when it comes to learning new things.
Our school has about 800 students in grades 6-8. I teach around 95 of these students. Our students love novel studies and reading together as a class. This project would allow every single student to have this book in their hands and be able to take it home with them each night.
My Project
This novel study is important because it is part of the campaign for 1READ in Blount County Schools. Each middle school student will be reading Refugee by Alan Gratz. There are four middle schools which means a lot of students! I need help purchasing this novel for my students to each to have a copy that they can read, make notes, highlight, analyze, and capture the true excitement of this award winning novel! We will be reading this in class, creating videos and projects, and the author will be visiting each middle school! Gratz will meet with our students to have a meaningful discussion about their thoughts on the book. This is the first time that many of our students will have met an award-winning author in their own backyard! It is an exciting time for my students as this is the first novel that we want each student to have for themselves to keep and cherish forever!
