My Project

My school is located in a rural area of Western North Carolina. I have a very diverse group of students, but all are invested in our school, their education and school activities. Most of my students are involved with some aspect of our school's extracurricular program, be it athletics, academic or service clubs or the arts. Although manufacturing and corporate jobs are not as plentiful as in the past, my students are determined to learn and succeed in order to further their education.

Helping them achieve success will ensure their future by giving them the best possible chances in life.

Creating responsible civic minded students cognizant of their history will ensure a future civic and historically minded community.

George Orwell's Animal Farm and 1984 are both works of literature that address the possible future if citizens are not informed and engaged with the political process. These works also address what can happen if citizens are misinformed, lazy or fail to take action. By using graphic novels, students will be more apt to read the books, understand the themes and major points and think critically about their application to politics, government, and socioeconomic status. The goal of this project is to engage students with literature, build literacy skills, enhance critical thinking and to further create an informed citizenry.
