My Students

Do you realize that if students read 15 minutes a day, they can increase their reading comprehension and fluency!

I teach in a public school located within our city's jail.

My students are young men who are currently being detained awaiting trial. Some of my students are at grade level or even above grade level, but many of my students are below grade level by several years. Some of my students have not been in school for many years, but since they are "locked up", they decide to start working towards their high school diploma.

My Project

I want to make sure that my students have a chance to read every day for fifteen minutes, for studies have shown that students who read consistently show growth. I am requesting high interest books that have been shown to be successful with at-risk minority students. The books I am requesting are written at all levels of readability, so that my students who are reading at a third grade level, and my students who are at grade level, can experience success and grow as readers. By having my students read everyday, I am improving their fluency, comprehension, and word knowledge. I am also helping them improve their social skills, because they will have the option of working in a group to read these novels.

I currently have books in my classroom; I also have students who love those books.

I am writing this grant to help replenish my classroom library because literacy is so important in today's society.
