My Students
Flushing is a vibrant community, with a growing population. But many of our students are new to the country and begin their education at a disadvantage. They need all the help they can get, and I'm happy to ask for it on their behalf.
The struggle to learn in a new environment, and with a new language -one that their parents often don't speak- is very challenging.
But our students don't shy away from such challenges, nor does our staff.
We have a supportive administration, knowledgeable teachers, caring parents and eager students. But budgets and incomes being what they are, we sometimes don't have all the supplies or tools needed to make the best impact we can. Please help us make a difference by donating today. Thank you.
My Project
Students, like adults, tend to stay within their comfort zone, rarely branching out into new and unfamiliar territory. I hope to change that by introducing my students to the works of Walter Dean Myers, and his heartbreaking and inspirational tales about growing up on 145th street in Harlem.
Race and equality, privilege and poverty, love, struggle, friendship: these short stories touch upon all of it.
My students tend to know the world as being within a 10 block radius of their homes. As an educator, I hope to begin broadening their horizons and opening them up to new and different viewpoints. This book can help me achieve that.
