My young scientists need to explore the changing world around them. Little hands can help the future! Creating environmentally conscious habits starts at a young age.
I teach kindergarten to 20 five and six year old students.
We are so lucky to live on the beautiful island of Oahu, and our school is located right across the street from the beach. My students are active, creative and love the great outdoors. The beach is our community playground and we are beginning to see the effects of marine debris. My students need to learn ways they can be beach buddies to help protect our oceans. My students are the future and this "Teach for the Planet" project will provide my students with tools to help protect the environment they live in.
My Project
My "Teach for the Planet" project is focused on marine conservation. Students will participate in hands on lessons related to environmental impacts on the ocean and marine life. One lesson will be understanding the impact of using single use plastics and how they impact our marine life. Students will look at plastic bag usage, and then create their own reusable bag with a slogan they create. They will help their parents by remembering to bring reusable bags when going to the store.
I am also requesting gloves, because as part of this project we will be doing a beach clean up. Students will count and sort rubbish and analyze. The idea of leave only footprints when you go to the beach will be reinforced as well as packing your trash. I am requesting materials for a mock oil spill clean up experience. Students will learn the importance of reducing oil consumption and conserving energy. I am requesting a GoPro camera to document their experiences and for students to create awareness videos.
Young students can have a powerful impact on our environment.
They need to learn at a young age ways they can help. Marine debris is such a huge problem, but if we break it down to simple things kids can do to help, it will have a lasting impact. My students will learn that the little things like turning off the lights, using reusable bags, reusable water bottles, riding a bike, recycling and picking up your trash are all things little hands can do to help save our planet.
